About this qualification

This qualification is part of a suite of qualifications that build on knowledge and skills from entry level 1 through to level 2. It will support learners with any identified skills gaps in English and has been designed using the Functional Skills subject content to develop essential skills for everyday life and support progression to Functional Skills.

The qualification can also be used to progress to a GCSE in English.

Who is it suitable for?

This qualification is suitable for any learner who has not studied an English qualification at this level. It is specifically split into smaller units of learning and is assessed internally to help build confidence in essential skills and knowledge.

Pre-16 learners who are not following, or are not yet ready to follow, a traditional GCSE route in education for English could also study this qualification.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no specific prior skills/knowledge a learner must have for this qualification. However, learners may find it helpful if they have already achieved an entry level 3 qualification in English.

How is it assessed?

This qualification is internally assessed.

NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Essential English in Everyday Life

Practical Literacy Skills: Focuses on improving reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills for everyday communication, such as understanding written instructions, composing emails, or participating in discussions.

Workplace Communication: Develops language skills relevant to job roles, including writing reports, understanding workplace documents, and effective verbal communication.

Functional Reading and Writing: Teaches strategies for interpreting and producing various text types, such as articles, letters, forms, and persuasive or instructional texts.

Problem-Solving Through English: Enhances the ability to use English to solve real-world problems, such as analysing information, comparing viewpoints, and presenting arguments clearly and logically.
